Abenteuerland Georgien

Svaneti

In Kutaisi we said goodbye to Philipp who was flying home. We started to discover the Caucasus mountains. We took the short way and crossed small villages in front of the beginning of the mountains. The village Mestia on an altitude of 1500 meter was the first stop. This village has only 2600 inhabitants but also an airport. It was a prestige project of the former president Mikheil Saakashvili to support the tourism in this region. This was what we could also see at the houses which were giving the village more the look of a Swiss Chalet than a Georgian mountain village. With the arriving thunderstorm we were looking for a guest house in a village 14km from Mestia, called Zabeshi. There we enjoyed the first time the incredible sky full of stars over the mountains of Svanetia.

We spent the next two days hiking in the mountains. We spent one night in a real old village called Adishi. The weather was just perfect and one mountain panorama was better than the previous one. But sometimes there was no time for enjoying the nature because bad gadflies were bothering us.

After two days hiking we were 25 street kilometers away from our car. A cab was about 50€ which was way too much in our eyes. That’s why we tried hitchhiking, because we also forgot to withdraw money in Mestia and we started to live on a shoestring. After a while we were lucky because a Ford Transit market car stopped. The driver opened the door to the cargo area where we spent the next two hours between packages and chips.
