We crossed a second time the Elburz mountains and went to the capital Tehran. It is a city with 8 million inhabitants – and a cosmopolitan city. We realized that when we used the first time Couchsurfing in Iran and we ended up staying with a homosexual couple. They told us that sex between two men or two women can sentence with the death toll. But gays are more or less tolerated by the government unless they don’t show their sexuality in public or even worse: go on the street for demonstrations. We met several young people in the city who think that the situation will change soon in Iran because more and more people are less religious. The last protests were in 2009. The so called green revolution was condensed violently and a lot of young people were sent to prison. Like our host in Tehran. His stories about his experiences in the prison were very bad.
Our host brought us to a gathering were young people meet to sing and tell poems. Even when we didn’t understand a word it was a very cool atmosphere.
In Theran we did the obligatory sightseeing. The Golestan palace was stunning. It was the residence of different Shahs and had therefore splendorous rooms and beautiful gardens.
We also met Reza in the capital who joined us later for traveling. It was a big luck for us because some days later we found ourselves in a situation which nobody wants to be. But it was another experience which I will tell about in the next blog post.
